AHR VALLEY & PROWEIN: The German Pinot Experience

2 – 5 March 2012

This tour takes us to the spectacular Ahr valley, where the sharply meandering river winds it way through steep, vine-clung slate slopes devoted mostly to Spätburgunder (Pinot noir).

Discover the famous vineyard sites of this mini canyon (weather permitting partly on foot) and taste the stylistic diversity of its wines from top producers, including

  • Meyer-Näkel, dubbed “saviour of the Ahr” for his role in igniting the quality revolution
  • Jean Stodden, whose expertise was once again confirmed at a recent taste-off of German Pinots against a selection from around the world and
  • Deutzerhof, another pioneer, with the valley´s largest range of wines, not just classy Spätburgunders but also arguably the country´s finest Dornfelder

No picture of the Ahr would be complete without a visit to the all-important cooperatives, such as the Mayschosser Winzergenossenschaft, Germany´s oldest and voted the country´s best in 2010.
Our tour finishes with two days at the ProWein in Düsseldorf, Germany´s leading international trade fair for wines and spirits. Here you can taste a stunning collection of wines from over 3,600 producers from 50 countries – the perfect forum to compare Pinots from all over Germany and across the globe. Carolyn will be on hand with tips and tricks to help you make the most of your visit.
